Not only does reclaimed wood help reduce environmental impact, but it also brings a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that simply can’t be replicated by new materials.
What Is Reclaimed Wood Furniture?
Reclaimed wood furniture is made from recycled timber that has been salvaged from old structures, including barns, factories, warehouses, and even old ships. This wood, often aged and seasoned by time, is repurposed to create furniture that carries a unique history and unmatched beauty. The wood can be sourced from a variety of places, but it always carries a sense of authenticity that makes it stand out in any room.
At Glenn Furniture, we take pride in sourcing high-quality reclaimed wood and transforming it into beautiful, handcrafted furniture that tells a story of its own.
A Reclaimed Wood Ghost Story
You might think reclaimed wood furniture costs less to build than new wood. But you could not be more wrong. Let me tell you my worst story about using reclamined wood.
In the coastal town of Jepara, Indonesia, where the waves of the Java Sea lap against the shore, lies Glenn Furniture, my pride and joy. One of my favorite pastimes was walking along the beach, letting my thoughts drift with the tide. On one such walk, something unusual caught my eye—a shipwreck. I’d been watching this old vessel for months, slowly sinking deeper into the golden sand, its decaying hull once strong and now battered by time. It wasn’t a massive ship, maybe around 30 meters long, but what stood out most to me was the teak wood. Being a furniture maker, I could see potential in that weathered timber, though I wasn’t entirely sure of its condition.
As time passed, the idea of salvaging the wood nagged at me. Could this forgotten wreck be a hidden treasure waiting to be uncovered? Curiosity got the better of me. After asking around, I eventually tracked down the owner of the wreck. To my surprise, he agreed to sell the entire thing—all the wood—for just $200. At that moment, I felt like I had struck gold. Visions of finely crafted teak furniture filled my mind, and I hurried back to the factory, eager to share the news with my management team.
Excitement buzzed through the workshop as I told the team about the old ship and the treasure trove of teak waiting to be reclaimed. But my dream of transforming the wreck into beautiful furniture quickly hit a snag. When we sent the workers to begin the job, they refused—firmly. They believed the ship was haunted. Out of 50 workers, only two were brave (or crazy) enough to agree to work on dismantling it.
So, with those two workers and a couple of local handymen, we headed back to the beach to start the disassembly. That’s when the real challenge began. It wasn’t just the heat, the sand, or the sheer size of the ship; it was the millions of nails that had held the vessel together for years. Every plank of wood we managed to pull free was a struggle, but we pushed on.
Months passed, and while the work was grueling, we managed to salvage enough wood to make it worthwhile. Slowly but surely, I began to see that my investment would pay off—not in riches, but in hard-earned, sweat-soaked satisfaction. Some of the reclaimed wood became sturdy workbenches for the shop. The rest? It was transformed into beautiful furniture, the kind you’d never imagine had once been part of an old, forgotten shipwreck.
But there was another surprise. During the disassembly, we found two heavy-duty motors buried in the hull. One of them, after some tinkering and a lot of elbow grease, roared back to life. We repurposed it as a backup generator for the factory—a small victory after months of hard work.
In the end, while the project didn’t make me a millionaire, it taught me something far more valuable. It was a lesson in persistence, hard labor, and finding beauty in the unexpected. The wood we reclaimed wasn’t just furniture—it was history, reborn.
